On the Atlantic coast, north of Colombia, there is the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, a lagoon complex of brackish waters bordered to the east by the mountains, to the north by the ocean and to the west by the delta of the Magdalena River. At the turn of the 2000s, the area was the scene of a bloody series of massacres done by the paramilitaries of the AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia) in order to have a strategic control of the area. The local population suffered a devastating violence, many civilians were tortured or murdered, many others were forced to abandon their lands and homes in order to survive.
